The Shack as it appears now.

The Cushcraft X-9 is at 40 feet on my TX-438 tower.  Installed at the end of August 2008.
My amplifier is rarely needed anymore on 20 meters and I can't wait for 15m and 10m to begin opening up.
[Has nothing to do with the reason why I graduated from the AL-811H to the AL-1200 in early July 2009]

The King Cobra dipole has been at 70 feet (21.34m) in my back yard since 2004.  I'm sure there are many better dipoles
out there but this one has been my favorite since building it.  My Cobra consists of 12 AWG 3-Conductor ROMEX electrical
house wire (the wire is left within the sheath); 100 feet (30.48m) of 450 Ohm Ladder Line; a few pieces of 1/4" Plexiglas for center and

end insulators; 5/16" Dacron rope; and an MFJ-912 4:1 Balun (W9INN Box).  Each 70 feet long leg is linear loaded with 210 feet of wire.

The antenna requires a good roller inductor "tuner" for greatest flexibility especially for using an amplifier.
The Cobra dipole antenna was originally designed by Ray Cook, W4JOH and was published in 73 magazine.

12 October 2009:My old "King Cobra" was retired due to UV wear and breakage (wind storms).

2 Apr 2010: I have built and installed the "Anaconda" using 12 AWG exterior Romex.  Essentially it's a Cobra with 86' legs.

I worked V26AO and F5IN, respectively, using 200 watts with the Anaconda dipole on 160m in early April 2010.

This is a pretty decent dipole!

So does the Anaconda.

Works from 160m to 10m

From New England (Eastern Mass.) I worked Ducie on 100 watts with
a Kenwood TS-2000 and Clipperton with a Yaesu FT-1000D running 200 watts using my Cobra...20 meters.

I worked Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland, and Ireland in 2009 on 160m with the 140 foot version of the Cobra antenna.,

It's very easy to build one too...

If you don't want to build one yourself you can purchase a Cobra UltraLite Sr. or Jr.
at any Ham Radio Outlet store or directly from Joe, K1JEK. Just click the link below..
Tell Joe that W1KQ sent you.
